National FacOff Combine V Recap

The Round of 16 began with Andrew Burnett (Brentwood HS-TN) overcoming SUNY-Cortland recruit Patrick Baldwin (Alpharetta HS-GA), 4-2. Ryan Comolli (No. Kingstown HS-RI) beat Kris Clarke (Chaminade HS-NY), 4-2. A talented Joseph Eiseman (Sachem East HS-NY) was eliminated by eventual champion, Tyler Golian (Gonzaga College HS-VA), by the same score. Jonathan Gomer (Duxbury HS-MA), making his second straight NFC appearance, lost to freshman phenom Charles Kelly (Malvern Prep-PA), 4-1. Team Ontario/Canada U19 standout Jay Lindsay (Notre Dame Catholic-Ontario) took Tyler Nangle (New Hope Solebury-PA), 4-2. UPenn Quaker commit Zach Penfil (Garnet Valley HS-PA) advanced past Justin Kane (Spain Park HS-AL), 4-1. Sophomore stud J.P. Masaryk (Fairfield Prep-CT) fell victim to Sam Talkow (Pinecrest School-FL), 4-1. The final first round matchup saw Austin Williams (Delbarton School-NJ) edge Andrew Walsh (Bronxville HS-NY), 4-3.

The quarterfinals opened with Comolli taking Burnett to the distance, and being eliminated on the 7th and decisive draw by the D1 Sacred Heart Univ. bound player. Golian overwhelmed a rugged Kelly, 4-1, who will no doubt be back for several more NFC competitions as the 2015 player is well ahead of his same-age peers. Lindsay snuck by Penfil in a hard-fought, 7 draw quarterfinal matchup. Talkow did the same with Williams to enter the semifinals.

The Final Four was a treat to the spectator. While the four remaining competitors had already shed sweat and blood to remain in the hunt, they put forth considerable effort again in the semifinal round. Golian overcame a 2-2 stalemate to defeat Burnett. Lindsay shook off Talkow, finally on the 7th draw.

The previous four NFC championship matchups had all gone the distance to 7 draws. The 5th annual title tilt followed suit, as Tyler Golian was crowned king in beating a very athletic Jay Lindsay, who can find consolation in the fact that inaugural NFC runner-up Cole Yeager (Radnor HS-PA) is ripping up NCAA Division 1 face-offs now for the Yale Bulldogs and was ranked Top 5 last spring in winning percentage. NFC5 was an indication of how competitive FO is now at the HS level.
